Portland Roasting & Eleven Wireless Provide Wi-Fi to 200 Java JointsIndependent Shops to Serve Alternative to Corporate Coffee

PORTLAND, Ore. (June 16, 2003) -- Eleven Wireless, a leading provider of wireless Internet solutions (also known as "Wi-Fi"), and Portland Roasting, a specialty coffee roaster and wholesaler, today announced a strategic partnership to provide Wi-Fi hotspots to more than 200 independently-owned coffee houses throughout the Pacific Northwest.

The alliance enables Portland Roasting to offer a branded wireless network to retailers powered by Eleven Wireless (Eleven). Portland Roasting merchants may now offer the convenience, speed, and ease-of-use of wireless broadband to their retail customers. Portland Roasting expects its retail partners to profit from Wi-Fi usage and increase customer loyalty by attracting people who might otherwise frequent franchise and other large corporate venues.

According to Starbucks executives, visitors using Wi-Fi stay in store an average of 45-minutes compared with the average customer who stays for less than 10-minutes. "Now independently-owned coffee merchants can compete with corporate-owned coffee and increase sales associated with extended customer visits, said Todd Plummer, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Portland Roasting. "We’ve partnered with Eleven because of their expertise in Wi-Fi and their ability to help us build our customer loyalty through a unified Wi-Fi network,"

Two pilot locations have already deployed Wi-Fi on the Portland Roasting network: Cafe D'Vine in Vancouver, Wash., and Thurman Café, Portland, Ore. Coffee customers with wireless-equipped laptops visiting these locations can log on via Wi-Fi with pre-paid Portland Roasting cards sold at both locations. Portland Roasting and Eleven plan to deploy at least 30 locations by the end of the year and pre-paid cards for Wi-Fi access can be purchased and used at all participating Portland Roasting venues.
